A poor quality fuel can mean a poor performance from your biomass boiler. When choosing fuel it’s important to look for a quality standard such as the ENplus certification, now the common European pellet standard. The advantage of these schemes is that quality is managed though the whole supply chain from production to storage and delivery to the customer.
If you are using wood pellets, you want to ensure a they have a low moisture content, typically under 10%, so that you can get the highest heat output per unit possible. An ash content under 1% means the wood pellets will burn more efficiently and also means less cleaning and maintenance for your biomass boiler later on. Of course, it’s good to know your fuel comes from a sustainable source too.
